Cairo is the capital of Egypt and its most important city, and with almost 20 million inhabitants, it’s also one of the world’s largest cities.
If we had to give Cairo a nickname, it would beย Chaos! Car horns blare from seemingly lawless roads, calls to prayer ring out from competing minarets, hawkers try to grab your attention from all angles… it is madness!
Add to that the scarce rain, millions of ancient vehicles and emissions from urban industry; you’ve also got one of theย most polluted cities in the world.
What to see in Cairo?
So why visit, you might ask. It’s exactly for this reason: to immerse yourself into the incredible hustle and bustle of one of the world’s largest cities; to see modern architecture contrast with 4000-year old monuments; and to experience daily life amongst the many different people who live in the city.
Cairo’s best known monuments are the awe-inspiringย Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. The Egyptian Museum, the pyramids of Saqqara and Memphis and the Saladin Citadel are all well worth a visit too.
